Tim Cook Reveals Why He Decided to Come Out

Tim Cook, Apple's CEO, shared why he decided to come out on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Tuesday night. The conversation, which was pretty casual and lighthearted, began with Colbert asking him, "Was that an upgrade or just a feature that had not been turned on before?" in regards to his coming out.

After the audience laughed, Cook explained that it was a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. quote — "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'what are you doing for others?'" — that pushed him to do something more for others. "It became so clear to me that people were getting bullied in school, kids were getting basically discriminated against, kids were even being disclaimed by their own parents, and that I needed to do something," he said. "And where I valued my privacy significantly, I felt I was valuing it too far above what I could do for other people. I wanted to tell everyone my truth."
