Can You Figure Out This Emoji Brain-Teaser?

Challenging brain-teasers and optical illusions have been floating around the internet for what seems like forever. There were the hidden panda puzzle and the square riddle, and who could forget the great dress debate of 2015? Well, now there are also brain-teasers with emoji.

Remember solving those frustrating equations in math class where X equaled something and Y equaled something else, and you had to figure out which equaled what? Sometimes you cracked the code quickly, while other times it took a whole class period (and a bit of pacing) to get to the solution. Now, instead of using letters, such as X, Y, and Z, these math-inspired brain-teasers are using emoji as the placeholders instead.

One of the newest is here, and at first glance, it may look like a complete headache. The first thing that comes to mind when I see a bunch of emoji usually isn't actual numbers. But it's all right, because we've got this.

Keep reading to see how to solve this puzzle!

To solve the problem, you need to just (take a deep breath and) break it down step by step. The first line has three heart-eyes emoji, and it is said to equal 27. This means that each heart-eyes emoji is worth the same amount. So 27 divided by three is nine. Make a note of this.

The second part gets a little trickier, with heart-eyes emoji plus smiling emoji makes 19. We already know that heart-eyes is nine, so subtract nine from 19 and you will end up with 10. Once again, make a note of this — we'll need to remember this information for the next part!

Next up we have heart-eyes plus smiley face minus sunglasses emoji equals seven. Yep, when I first saw this, I got a little flustered, but then I remembered that heart-eyes is a nine and smiley face is a 10. So heart-eyes plus smiley face is 19. And something subtracted from 19 is seven, so that something is 12.

We're almost there! The last part is pretty straightforward, thankfully, and is just the sum of all of the emoji. So heart-eyes (nine) plus smiley (10) plus sunglasses (12) equals — drum roll, please — 31. And there you have it!
