If there's one thing we can say for sure, it's that there's never been a better time to be a gamer. With more platforms, more indie developers, and more ways to play than ever, well, there's something out there for everyone, no matter what they're looking for. But it also means that making the decision as to what to buy is harder than ever, so for 2018 we've decided to test some of the hottest new releases and pull out the very best of the best, just for you. Ahead, check out what's already sent our hearts aflutter the last few months, and be sure to check back here each month for our most highly-recommended titles as we make our way through the year.

God of War

God of War

God of War ($69) has already proven to be one of the most popular (and best-selling) games of 2018, and it's with good reason: the eighth installment in the God of War series is one freakin' incredible game. Based on Norse mythology as opposed to Greek mythology (as in past iterations), it's a brand new experience for those familiar with the title, but for those who haven't played before – well, it's a mind-blowing quest to bring one woman's ashes to rest in what can only be described as a universe unlike any other, filled with astounding graphics, incredible cut-scenes, and some of the best gameplay we've seen in a long, long time.

Platform: PlayStation 4

Sea of Thieves
Sony

Sea of Thieves

How can you go wrong with a pirate-based action-adventure game? Well, you can't. Sea of Thieves ($59.88) isn't just visually compelling, super addictive, and (the best part) a shared multiplayer universe – it's also the best damn pirate game we've ever played. And if you're looking for a guaranteed break from the drama of real life, it's 100 percent here to do all that and more.

Platform: Xbox One

Shadow of the Colossus
Microsoft

Shadow of the Colossus

It's been 13 years since Shadow of the Colossus ($39.88) was first released, and 2005's best-seller does not disappoint in this newly-remastered, deeply original, adventure quest. While you may not always know what you're up against, taking down the enormous monsters in the game is just as satisfying as ever — and you'll be hanging on to every world until the very end.

Platform: PlayStation 4

Kirby Star Allies
Nintendo

Kirby Star Allies

It's been a long, long time since Kirby first appeared on our Game Boy systems in 1992, but he's still just as loveable as ever — and one of the most relaxing, easy-to-use characters that's ever existed. Kirby Star Allies ($54.98) sees him stay true to his roots as a boss-beating chameleon, but allows you to team up with friends (both IRL and in the context of the game) to expand the fun even further than before.
