Irish Breeds Perfect For St. Patrick's Day

While you won't see these pups at the pub celebrating St. Patrick's Day, these four-legged friends are as Irish as can be! In celebration of the holiday, our friends at American Kennel Club filled us in on the many loveable dog breeds that hail from Ireland.

Irish Setters are high-energy dogs with playful personalities and require frequent exercise to satisfy their specific breed instincts. They are superloveable companions and guard dogs. They are very high energy and loving dogs that require regular grooming for their silky mahogany coats.

This breed is known to be very determined, full of energy, and courageous. Because of this, frequent exercise is crucial. Fun fact: Ireland actually featured the Irish Red and White Setter with the Irish Setter on a postage stamp in the early 1900s. Irish Red and Whites are sweet and friendly, making them ideal pets for families. To make things easier, their coats need minimal brushing and trimming.

The Irish Water Spaniel is superenergetic with a natural instinct to please. They're actually the tallest spaniel breed and known to be the clown of the spaniel family. Due to their water-repellant double coat, they require brushing weekly.

This breed is definitely the star of the show on St. Patrick's Day, having first appeared in the show ring at the Irish Kennel Club Championship on March 17, 1937. The breed is known for its ultrasoft, silky, wheaten-colored coat, which surprisingly minimally sheds. Wheatens enjoy a ton of exercise, are full of joy, and are extremely alert.

The Kerry Blue Terrier is known for his excellent working and hunting skills. The Kerry Blue was originally bred for hunting small game and birds and for retrieving from land and water. This breed loves being a part of a family that is full of energy just as much as they are. Their coat requires regular brushing and trimming.

The Irish Wolfhound is the tallest of all dogs. Due to their large size, they require a lot of space and exercise. But don't be fooled; they are also perfect family companions. Irish Wolfhounds are extremely gentle with a keen sense of sight and endurance. They have a rough, natural coat that requires frequent brushing.

Fun fact: the Irish Terrier was featured in the 2007 movie Firehouse Dog, where it was cast as a loving canine hero. During World War I, Irish Terriers were used to transport messages between troops on the front lines. Their extreme bravery, loyalty, and warm spirit make them wonderful companions. Irish Terriers adapt to any given situation, and they are superfriendly. The Irish Terrier has the unique distinction of being the only all-red terrier among its breed.
