The New iPhone's Camera Does Something Really F*cking Cool

While you might have been impressed by the new latest iPhone edition's color options (rose gold, anyone?!), there's another feature on the 6S that will absolutely blow you away. The smartphone's 12-megapixel camera is capable of taking Live Photos, which are a completely new approach to capturing memories. Harry Potter fans, you're about to experience the magic of moving photos in the muggle world.

Neither GIFs nor videos, these Live Photos appear as usual in your photo stream until you press on them with the iPhone 6S's 3D Touch. These high-quality files are still images, but with an extended capture moment of one-and-a-half seconds before and after the photo, allowing you view a moment of vitality surrounding each actual photo — such as rippling water or the beginning of your toddler's laugh. Live Photos can include sound and are viewable across Apple devices . . . even on the Apple Watch! The best part? You don't have to do anything different to take one; the feature is default selected at the top of the iPhone camera (near other options such as HDR and the self-timer), and you simply take pictures as usual.

To get a better understanding of this incredible new feature, check out our video from the Apple presentation below and check out more impressive iPhone camera specs. Trust us, every photographer will want to upgrade their phone ASAP!

Other iPhone 6S and 6S Plus Camera Specs

  • All your photos will be HD: The iPhone 6S and 6S Plus each come with a 12-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel FaceTime camera, which means larger panoramic images (sans stitching) and well-balanced light.
  • Videos will be insanely detailed: HD video comes standard with the iPhone 6S, which will also offer 4K video capabilities. This type of resolution boasts 8 million pixels in every frame — 1080p videos are a thing of the past!
  • Your FaceTime photos will be well lit: To balance the eyesight camera's TrueTone flash, the front-facing camera on the 6S models will use its Retina Display capabilities to create a natural, balanced FaceTime photo flash.
