What Instagram Would Look Like If We Were All Honest

If everybody on Instagram was honest about their lives, it would look a whole lot different. Instead of pretty photos of in-demand pastries, it would show the 40 minutes of waiting and complaining about hunger. Chipped nails would oust perfectly manicured snaps. Shots of Netflix binges and leftover pizza would be more prevalent than group pictures outside glamorous nightclubs. That's why one Instagram account is aiming to take away the filters to show women in real life.

WomenIRL features imperfect moments from ladies everywhere — the truth behind the perfect snapshots. Started by Real Simple, the account points out how social media distorts reality for viewers and posters alike. At the 2015 SXSW debate about WomenIRL, Real Simple staged a pressing question: "What are the psychological implications of appearing and/or aspiring to social media 'perfection' and how does cropping out parts of our lives – the disappointments, mediocre meals, unruly children – lead to feelings of duality?"

Check out these images from real women in real situations, and remember that Instagram typically shows the best angle of everything. If we all posted with fewer filters and a bit more honestly, perhaps we could finally capture the refreshing essence of real life!
