You'll Instantly Relate to Why This Instagram Star Is Quitting Social Media
These days, it's becoming more and more transparent how much of social media is contrived and staged. One Instagram celebrity is tired of how fake it feels and has quit her accounts to raise attention about the pressures to live up to social media standards.
Essena O'Neill is an 18-year-old Australian model who made a career off being a fashion model and social media star with more than 500,000 Instagram followers and 200,000 YouTube subscribers. Based on her accounts, it looked like she had the perfect life: she was a young girl with a seemingly perfect body who was always happy. But in a video uploaded to YouTube, O'Neill spoke about how being the girl who had it all on social media "absolutely means nothing to your real life." She explained how every aspect of her life became only about living ". . . for views, likes, and followers." She has since removed more than 2,000 photos on her Instagram account, renamed it "Social Media Is Not Real Life," and updated captions on her photos to reflect her true feelings about them. O'Neill also created a website devoted to no longer living up to social media expectations.
Her aim is to help others who feel the same societal pressures. ". . . I no longer want to spend hours and hours of my time scrolling, viewing and comparing myself to others," she wrote on her website. "I don't want to be liked or judged either. I want a place where I can give with no expectations or outcome." She's definitely not alone, as more people are trying to do the same. Take one woman's Instagram account about her shameless junk-food-eating life, for example. Watch O'Neill's NSFW video of why she quit ahead, as well as see her old Instagram photos with new captions. Her words will definitely resonate with you.
