What Going to School in the '90s Was Like

Jan 26 2016 - 3:45pm

Another day, another reminder that you're no longer living in the '90s when life was just simpler, especially in school. Remember when your face would light up when you saw a TV cart roll through with a substitute teacher? Sure, kids today don't have to suffer through the pain of writing secret notes hoping it doesn't fall into the wrong hands, but we wouldn't give up our experiences of growing up in the period of Tamagotchis and Discmans [1] for anything. So put on an old mix CD if you still have one and look through all the moments in school that only true '90s kids would understand.

Sending notes and praying your teacher wouldn't catch one and read it aloud.

Knowing how hard it was to stay awake when a overhead projector was used.

Playing Mixed-Mother Goose and trying your hardest to win.

Reading the latest book in the Animorphs series until . . .

You switched to other sci-fi novels that terrified you.

Sighing to yourself for the 10th time when you lost Minesweeper.

Rocking a Sailor Moon lunchbox and wondering how cool you looked.

Lugging around a huge calculator and laughing at the dirty things you could write on them.

Burning the perfect CD to play after school with your friends.

Labeling your floppy disks for every class project — with a gel pen.

Seeing your dad's face turn red when he realized how much a zip drive would cost.

Grinning in appreciation whenever a substitute teacher rolled in with this.

Wishing your school would update its VHS collection to something a little less G-friendly.

Feeling extremely smart when you beat Number Munchers.

Hearing the dial-up sound in computer class knowing you were superclose to Neopets.

Learning how to type on Mario Teaches Typing and wondering if your fingers would ever get used to it.

Cheers to '90s kids and everything we grew up with.
