72 New Emoji Are Coming, Including an Avocado!

Jun 26 2016 - 5:30pm

Are you ready emoji lovers? The Unicode Consortium officially announced and released the full list of new emoji [1] for Unicode 9.0. Most of the candidates submitted previously, sans for seven [2], are now part of the list.

Back in August 2015, Emojipedia released mock-ups [3] of what they'd look like. Created by artist Joshua M. Jones, the new expressions, like selfie and lying face, are excellent, and while many people aren't fans of the clown face, we think he's all right. Many of these were requested by a variety of groups or pointed out to the Consortium as certain "gender counterparts" [4] that were missing. For example, there's a princess but no prince and a Father Christmas but no Mother Christmas. Below are the final emoji mock-ups [5] released on June 2 by Emojipedia.

While the final list of emoji are now approved by the Consortium, companies like Apple and Google need to approve them before they make it onto our phones. Chances are they will and we might see the new emoji on iOS 10 [7] or Android N [8].

If you're excited about Unicode 10.0 already, a list of eight new emoji proposals [9] is already out. One of them includes the dumpling emoji, which made it onto the list after a successful Kickstarter campaign [10]. The campaign to add a dumpling emoji began in 2015. It was started by Jennifer 8. Lee [11], a former New York Times journalist and current CEO of Plympton. She noticed that the dumpling, a seemingly universal food item, was not on the list and wanted to fix that, she told BuzzFeed [12]. Two websites and a Kickstarter campaign later, it's now an official candidate for becoming an emoji in June of 2017, along with a fortune cookie, takeout box, chopsticks, and face with one eyebrow raised emoji.

But, we'll have to wait for those emoji in a year. For now, here's the full list of the 72 new emoji for this year:

While we think they still missed some key emoji [14], it's still pretty great to finally see the avocado emoji in action. But let's be real: nothing will ever be better than the poop emoji.
