Microsoft's New Ad on Girls Who Want a Career in Science Has a Twist You Won't See Coming

Mar 16 2017 - 8:45am

It's not easy being a young girl with dreams of pursing a career in science, technology, engineering, or math [1] (STEM). There are plenty of obstacles [2] she'll need to overcome to achieve her goals. But the next generation is sure they'll meet them — no matter what. In a new Microsoft ad [3], the company shows different girls who are excited about changing the world and determined to do it despite the odds [4].

The video begins by asking a group of girls what they want to change in the world. One girl wants to find a cure for breast cancer, another is worried about fresh water. Microsoft then lets them explore these interests. Then the girls sit back down and they're shown a screen that reads as follows: "Odds are you won't solve these problems. Only 6.7 percent of women graduate with STEM degrees [6]." At first, the girls are crestfallen. Watch the video above to see how the girls rise up despite this statistic.
