Here's a Guide on Everything You Might've Missed at Microsoft's Big Event

Oct 11 2015 - 2:35pm

From smartphones to new tablets to the company's first-ever laptop, Microsoft released a suite of new products and updates that attempt to position itself as a brand to love. If you're at a loss as to what's new and if you should start keeping your eye on any of the announced products, look ahead. These are definitely products you don't want to be the last to hear about, as they might become the first items on any wish list.

Finally, the new Surface Pro 4.

A tablet that's 50 percent faster than the Macbook Air? That's what Microsoft claims about the Surface Pro 4 [1], a thinner tablet with an all-new keyboard cover, Surface Pen, and other features.

The first-ever Microsoft laptop.

Not only did Microsoft release a new laptop, but the display on the Surface Book [2] is actually detachable from the keyboard. Essentially, you get everything you want from a laptop and the feasibility to make it a tablet whenever you want.

The Lumia 950, now with Windows 10 and Continuum.

The Lumia 950 [3] might be the answer for what people want from a Windows phone, with a 20 megapixel rear-facing camera and a faster processor. It also works seamlessly with Continuum, a feature on Windows 10 that lets you use your phone as a PC.

And then there's the Lumia 950 XL, a slightly larger Lumia 950.

The Lumia 950 XL [4] has several of the same features as the Lumia 950, like the camera's megapixels and storage options. The key difference is its size and processor.

The Lumia 550, a cheaper Windows smartphone.

Unlike the Lumia 950 and 950 XL, the Lumia 550 is simply for people who need a phone and want it to run really well. The display size stands at 4.7 inches and the rear-facing camera is at 5 megapixels. It only has the capacity for 8 GB, but that should be enough for simple phone usage. It will cost $139, be available in December in Europe only, but it will roll out to other areas soon after.

The HoloLens promises to turn every part of your world into a game.

Snap on the HoloLens and your entire house becomes a virtual game. Without being connected to a PC or phone, you can fully play a game and actually hold holograms to win against an enemy. It will be available to developers only in 2016 and will cost $3,000.

An improved Microsoft Band 2.

A curved design, 11 sensors, and the ability to work with more third-party apps arrives on the Microsoft Band 2 [5]. This might actually be a wearable you want to get, since its design has improved a lot since the product's first iteration. You can preorder it today [6], with the product out on Oct. 30, costing $250.
