When it comes to curating your Twitter experience, there are tons of ways you can customize what you see and how you see it. The simplest thing, of course, is following and unfollowing accounts based on your interests and friendships. But what do you do when you're tired of your coworker's memes but can't unfollow because office drama [1], or your friend starts clogging up your feed by livetweeting a show [2] you can't stand? That's where the beautiful "mute" feature comes into play.

Muting someone on Twitter is exactly what it sounds like: a setting that hides a certain person's tweets from your timeline without actually unfollowing them. There are a few different ways to mute someone, but they all follow a similar, brief set of steps:

  1. Open Twitter and go to the account of the person you want to mute (either by searching for them or finding them in your following list.
  2. Click on the three little dots in the upper right corner next to the "Following" button, opposite their header photo.
  3. Select "Mute (account name)"

You can also mute someone directly from one of their tweets. In that case, simply click the little down arrow in the upper right corner of the individual tweet in your feed, then select "Mute (account name)" from the pop-up menu.

If you're on desktop Twitter, the process is pretty similar. To mute directly from a tweet, just click on the arrow at the corner of the tweet and select the "mute" option from the menu that appears. To mute from someone's account, click on the three vertical dots on the right-hand side just below their header pic; that will give you the menu with the "mute" option too.

There's two other great things about the "mute" feature. First, it's totally private, so the people you mute will have no idea you've muted them [3], making it the perfect option for cleaning up your feud without causing Twitter drama. Second, it can be reversed at any time [4], so when you're ready to see someone's tweets again, you can easily follow the steps above and just select "unmute" instead to undo it.
